Treat Allergies in Cats - Clean away the dust and pollen that exists in your home. These cause human allergies and can also be a source of allergies for your pet. You may even want to try an air filtration system in your home. This will clean the air for your pet so that your pet stops having a reaction to the dust and pollen in the air.
Switch food brands. If your cat is suffering from a food allergy, you will need to switch his food to an all-natural brand. You can know that this is the cause if you just started giving your cat the food and he began showing signs of allergies. Otherwise, you can just switch the food and see if it makes any difference. If it does, then you know that was the cause.
Buy a colloidal oatmeal shampoo (see "Additional Resources," below), and begin bathing your cat with this shampoo. If your cat doesn't like getting a bath, you may need to contact a groomer and bring your shampoo for them to use. A colloidal oatmeal shampoo will help with any skin allergies and will reduce the itching.
Purchase Biotin for your cat. This is a supplement that has been known to alleviate dry and itchy skin. You will need to get the exact dose from your veterinarian, but it will be somewhere around 6 micrograms per day. Give the Biotin two weeks to work.
Visit your veterinarian and get a prescription for an antihistamine. The antihistamine is the only thing that will get rid of your cat's runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing and coughing. Only your veterinarian can tell you which antihistamines are safe for cats and which dose your cat requires.
There is nothing worse than watching your cat suffer from allergies. As a cat owner, it's important that you learn a number of treatments for allergies caused by food, skin irritations and airborne allergens. You will need to begin treating the allergies as soon as possible because they won't go away on their own. In fact, allergies tend to build up over time and worsen.
