Feed a Baby With a Milk Allergy

Feed a Baby With a Milk Allergy - If breastfeeding, cut out dairy. The protein in milk products does cross over to breast milk, so it's important that a mother who is nursing her baby should stop consuming dairy products. Mothers should talk to doctors about taking calcium supplements, and alternative foods to ensure complete nutrition is being achieved without consuming dairy products.

Switch formulas. Babies who are formula-fed will need to try a soy-based formula first. Some infants with milk allergies are also sensitive to the protein in soy, so if there is no improvement, the next step is trying a hypoallergenic formula. According to Healthy Children in "Milk Allergy," hypoallergenic formulas are processed in a way so that proteins are broken down and easily digestible.
Read labels. As a baby grows, and eventually starts eating baby food, read all ingredients to ensure there are no milk products in the food. Jarred baby foods, especially "dinners" which may contain a variety of meat, vegetables, rice, or pasta may also include dairy products, such as milk or cheese.

Write down symptoms. It is helpful to parents as well as doctors if a record is kept of what was eaten, and how the infant responded. Keeping a notebook that tracks food intake and symptoms that emerged minutes, or even hours after a meal may help determine a pattern that could be helpful in figuring out what foods baby may be sensitive to.

Rashes, upset stomach, diarrhea, and even respiratory problems can lead to the conclusion that an infant may have a milk allergy. According to Kids Health, in "Milk Allergy in Infants," two to three percent of babies have a condition where their immune system reacts against the protein found in milk. Once parents and doctors decide on a possible milk allergy, parents need to know how to change their infant's diet so that they can eat and grow without discomfort.
