Control Indoor Dust and Dander - Vacuum the carpet thoroughly once or twice each week. Use a vacuum cleaner that is equipped with an attached HEPA filter to help reduce the amount of dust that will be sent into the air by the vacuum cleaner. You may wish to wear a dust mask if you are allergy prone to limit your exposure to the airborne dust.
Remove excessive clutter from your household. Limit the amount of items you own that are prone to collecting dust. Books, throw pillows and knick-knacks on shelves are all considered dust magnets.
Keep pets out of sleeping areas and off of beds. Since many people spend up to one-third of their time in the bedroom, they are exposed to a high level of cat and dog dander on a nightly basis if pets are allowed into the room. Interestingly, the residue of cat dander can linger in carpet for as long as 20 weeks and for years in a mattress.
Reduce humidity in the home to help keep dust mite populations down. Dust mites thrive in warm air with humidity. Run the air conditioning when the weather is warm, and keep filters changed and clean.
Purchase zippered allergen impermeable covers for pillows, mattresses and box springs. These covers can be purchased at most allergy supply stores and help keep dust mites out of the bedding.
