Bathe your bulldog regularly (Drs. Foster and Smith recommend once or twice a week) with a hypoallergenic, hydrocortisone or oatmeal shampoo making sure to clean all of his skin folds. You can purchase these shampoos from your veterinarian.
Apply a hydrocortisone topical cream to your dog's feet and between her toes. Because bulldogs have a lot of loose skin around their toes and feet, work the salve carefully between all the folds.
Discuss administering over-the-counter medications with your veterinarian to help your bulldog overcome itchy skin. Veterinarians often recommend the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil in a combination with diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Watch your bulldog carefully when using Benadryl because his bracheocephalic nose (pushed in) may make it difficult for him to breathe due to the drug's sedative effect.
Talk with your veterinarian about immunotherapy as a treatment plan. Your bulldog would receive a series of allergen injections under the skin to force her immune system to build a resistance to the offending agents.
You notice your English bulldog scratching and sneezing more than usual, and you can rule out flea dermatitis and upper respiratory disease. His clean, shiny skin folds show signs of inflammation, his pushed-in nose drips fluid and he snores and grunts more than normally when he is sleeping.
