Treat Ear Allergies - Avoid the allergen causing the infection. The vast majority of allergy-related ear infections are caused by an allergic reaction to milk. If an ELIST Food Allergy Panel reveals that milk is the culprit, eliminate milk and other allergy-causing (dairy) foods from the diet. Food allergens are somewhat easier to avoid than environmental ones like dust, animals or pollen.
Treat the pain. Parents are advised to administer pain-relief drops for ears or ibuprofen or acetaminophen. It sometimes helps to apply a warm cloth or warm hot water bottle to the ear.
Take a medication to treat allergy symptoms. This course of treatment is more advisable for adults than children.
Runny noses, itchy eyes and coughing are symptoms of allergies, but ear infections--more commonly in children than adults--are another symptom of allergies. Ear infections can be acute (short-lived) or chronic (long-lasting and recurring). Ear infections occur in the ear's Eustachian tube. Allergies can cause swelling of the tissue lining the Eustachian tube, which leads to blockages and a buildup of fluid. This fluid is subject to bacterial infection, which results in a painful situation for adults or children.
