Relieve Dog Skin Allergy - Take your dog to the veterinary clinic so your vet can observe the irritation. Your vet may also do a skin scraping, a biopsy or blood work in order to conclude what is causing the skin allergy.
Eliminate the allergen. If it is a food allergy, your vet will recommend a hypoallergenic dog food to replace your dog's present food. You may have to try a number of different dog foods before you find one that relieves the skin allergy. Proteins consist of grains, vegetables and meat -- any one of them can cause an allergic reaction. If a detergent causes the allergen, change your detergent. If it's caused by wool, eliminate any wool that your dog is brushing against. If it is pollen, keep your pup inside during outbreaks and wash her paws when she comes in.
Implement flea control. Fleas are the most problematic allergen, according to veterinarian Eric Barchas. He suggests that all dogs have flea prevention regardless of the allergen affecting the dog.
Bath your dog in colloidal oatmeal. Colloidal oatmeal is simply oats ground into a fine powder. Add the powder to the bathwater and sponge it on your dog.
Give your dog omega-3 fish oils. Fish oils can strengthen the skin's resistance to allergens. Your veterinary has omega-3 fish oils in the right combinations for your dog.
A dog skin allergy can cause your dog to itch and lick her skin. Sometimes there is hair loss and localized hot spots where inflammation is apparent. Allergies occur because your dog's immune system is hypersensitive to a substance, something in the environment or in your dog's food. Pollen, grass, detergents, spores and proteins found in dog food are possible allergens. Your veterinarian cannot cure the allergies, but with his help you can certainly relieve the symptoms. The first step is to find out what is causing your dog to itch.
