Prevent Allergy Related Cold Sores - Pay very close attention to the first signs and symptoms of cold sore, known as the prodromal stage. Before the cold sore develops, you will experience burning, itching or tingling sensations around the mouth or even the nose. When you notice these symptoms, take note of everything you eaten, drank or consumed in the 12 to 24 hours proceeding. Over time, you may be able to pinpoint common food allergy triggers and eliminate them to prevent future outbreaks.
Be aware that toothpastes, chewing gum, cough drops and hard candies can often trigger cold sores, as they contain chemicals, such as sodium laurel sulfate, colorants and preservatives that can trigger sores. Consider switching to a natural toothpaste and eliminating gum, cough drops and hard candies to help prevent sores before they begin.
Respect current known food allergies, such as lactose intolerance and allergies to nuts and fish. While your major symptoms of allergies may seemingly have nothing to do with your cold sore outbreaks, allergic reactions lower the efficiency of the immune system and therefore can trigger your cold sores.
Get a full allergy work-up if the specific allergy causing cold sores is unknown. Because it may be an allergy to one specific food with no other signs or symptoms, determining that allergy can be extremely difficult through a trial and error process.
