Diagnose an MSG Alergy - Make a list of all the different foods you consumed within a 24-hour period prior to an attack. Although this is good advice for diagnosing any allergy, it is imperative when dealing with MSG because some people may have a delayed reaction or react only when MSG toxicity reaches an intolerable level in the body.
List the symptoms you experience after eating food that contains MSG. The most common symptoms include a migraine headache, tingling or numbness around or in the mouth, overall weakness, a rash and nausea. A severe reaction may quickly produce trouble breathing, vision problems and chest pain.
Learn to recognize MSG on food labels. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows the inclusion of the flavor enhancer in processed foods under different names. Look for the word “hydrolyzed” on the label, suggesting a form of MSG is present. If “textured vegetable protein” appears on the label, MSG is in the product.
Ask your doctor to perform an MSG “challenge” test as part of an overall attempt to diagnose an allergic reaction. You will ingest MSG in the doctor’s office and your symptoms monitored for the next 48 hours. After the first hour, you may go home, with instructions to contact the doctor if any symptoms appear.
Supplement your diet with vitamin B6. If your symptoms, after eating foods containing MSG, disappear or are less intense when you begin the vitamin regiment, you may be experiencing a reaction to MSG as a side effect of a vitamin B6 deficiency. Researchers found that more than 80 percent of test subjects quit reacting to MSG after taking 50 mg of vitamin B6 for 12 weeks.
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), sold in the United States as a flavor enhancer and widely used in Asian cooking is suspected as a trigger for adverse physical reactions. Diagnosis of an MSG allergy involves the patient’s own record of eating habits prior to an attack and may be difficult to determine due to industry labeling standards. A little sleuthing is necessary to diagnose an MSG allergy.
