Diagnose Dog Allergies - Memorize the most typical allergy symptoms that a dog might exhibit. These include dry and itchy, irritated skin that may cause the dog to chew on himself (or herself); a dull, lifeless coat; evidence of upset stomach like vomiting or diarrhea; skin inflammation; and fever.

Take the dog to the vet to make certain that allergy is the only problem. Some allergy symptoms mirror those of more serious diseases or conditions. For this reason, the vet may need to run one or more tests before a conclusive diagnosis can be made. Don’t be afraid to seek a second, third or fourth opinion.
Identify what might trigger the allergy. Typical food-related causes include grains like corn, oats or wheat; dairy products; and meats such as beef, pork and lamb. Pest-related causes can be attributed to fleas, ticks and spiders. It is also possible for a dog to be allergic to certain elements commonly found in the home. These might include items to which the dog comes in contact like bedding, clothing, or carpeting or irritants in the air related to things like room deodorants, dust or mold. Chemicals, like those found in shampoos or conditioners, could also cause the allergy. In short, a dog can be allergic to just about any of the same things as his or her human companion.

Make adjustments to deal with the things that might be causing the allergic reactions. For example, if the allergy is contact related, eliminate the dog’s contact with the item. Remove or replace it if possible. If the allergy is related to contaminants in the air like an allergy to dust, clean and vacuum more often to reduce allergens or install a humidifier to remove as many of them as possible from the air. If the allergy is food related, remove the offending foods from the dog’s diet.

Obtain proper treatment for the dog’s allergies.

Pet allergies can be quite serious if they are not controlled. Unfortunately, pet owners don’t always know what they are looking for, and they can make erroneous assumptions.
